Chapter 5

Dorothy sat on the porch of her best friend Martha, and to say she was perplexed would have been an understatement. She and Martha sat in utter silence for what seemed like ages before Martha finally spoke.

“Dorothy,” She said. “What’s troublin’ you? You’ve never been so silent for so long.”

“Haven’t I?” Dorothy said with a chuckle. “You’ve known me my entire life, you sure can’t say such a thing.”

“I can and I will,” Martha said. “Now out with it, what’s wrong?”

“You know about Jacob, of course,” Dorothy said.

“I’ve known about Jacob since before he came to live with you,” Martha said as she focused almost solely on the knitting, sat in her lap. She was making a blanket, Dorothy could tell that much. Martha was always knitting something. “You came to me and you said, ‘I don’t think I can do it.' In fact, you said it over and over again. Were you right?”

“I...” Dorothy said, letting her words trail off into the distance for a moment before she opened her mouth again, reeling the words in and catching them. “I may have been wrong, but it hasn’t been without its own troubles, that much I can say with certainty.”

“Troubles? Everything comes with troubles. You should see the pile of dishes in my sink right now. If my husband comes home to that there’ll be troubles a’ plenty.”

“Other troubles,” Dorothy said. “You know the ones. I had friends before this. I had so much fellowship, and now, because of Jacob, so many of them turn the other way. I haven’t told him this, truly I haven’t, and I feel that somehow I still do the Lord’s work by showing him kindness, but I do so miss my friends.”

“I am your friend, Dorothy,” Martha said, looking up for a moment. “I am still here. Is that not enough for you?”

“It IS enough!” Dorothy said, perhaps a bit too loudly. “I do not want you to think I fail to appreciate our bond. That’s not the case at all. But you’re not always here, and Thomas is always so busy, and sometimes...sometimes I feel so alone.”

“Are you really alone when you have God?” Martha pointed out. “He placed this burden on you because you could handle it. He would not have done so otherwise. God is not cruel, he is just, he is fair, and he helps us to fulfil our purpose on this world. Don’t you think maybe this is your purpose?”

“I thought so, perhaps, and that’s why I stuck with it for so long, but something’s happened, and I feel a conflict rising within myself.”

“Has it something to do with the accident?”

“You know about the accident?” Dorothy was a bit surprised.

“Everyone in the Crossing knows about the accident,” Martha said. “How is he doing anyway?”

“He...he can’t remember us or much of anything else,” Dorothy said. “It is as if he were a different person entirely. I have to say, my conflict rises from the fact that...well...I like this new Jacob better.
